About.

It's all about being Strategic...

Established in 2007

Sally began working as a psychologist in 2007, after working in Health Promotion settings.  She has grown her practice and work in the field of Multiple Sclerosis and the broader neurological space, as well as increased her focus on working with people who want to explore a strategic approach to their lives moving forward. Extending her practice to public speaking engagements and workshop facilitation, Sally thrives in providing individuals and groups with an authentic, genuine approach using high level rapport, humour, and teamwork.
Sally was thrilled to welcome Seona Ilalio, who shares a passion for working with People with MS, to Focussed Health Psychology in 2019.  And in 2021, we welcomed Liel Bridgford, a highly skilled Provisional Psychologist, to work in the team.

The Goal

Liel, Seona and Sally will work with you to help you shift your thinking, reframe your way of addressing a challenge, or work through an issue with a set goal in mind.  We will ask you to name what you want to get out of sessions with us, and then we will work with you to achieve the outcomes. Using an evidence based approach, and sitting firmly within a positive psychology framework, Focussed Health Psychology draws largely on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).
Focussed Health Psychology works with clients to increase their ability to be strategic while moving forward in life.

Psychologist

Sally Shaw is a psychologist who has worked within both clinical psychology and health promotion settings.  Having worked at Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Australia, Box Hill Hospital, and Dental Health Services Victoria, having served as a member of the Advisory Committee to the Board of MS Australia, and the Community Advisory Committee to Ambulance Victoria, Sally holds a particular focus on the provision of services, information, education and support to people with chronic illness or disability, and the health professionals that work with them.  Her doctoral thesis ‘Trying to take control while attempting to adapt: Perspectives of people with multiple sclerosis on the twelve months following diagnosis’ examined the need to take control while attempting to adapt to a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, and highlighted the importance of being appropriately informed, while also being provided with quality and considerate health care (if you are seriously interested, you can read it here!). Currently working as a psychologist in private practice, and as a creator of online courses for People with Multiple Sclerosis, Sally delivers focussed psychological strategies and support to people diagnosed with chronic conditions, other health challenges, disabilities, or to those wanting to make a change in the way they think about life.

It's about making a realistic assessment of the present.  And being active and engaged in managing the challenges you are facing looking forward. Not being an optimist, nor a pessimist.
But an optimistic realist.
